October  Newsletter  ...

                                                                     2007

Dear Parents,

The weeks seem to be going by so fast already!!  Things are settling down some, and the children have adjusted to their school day very well.  October will be busy - we have a lot planned as you will see.  Our trip to COSI was great, thanks again to all of you who went with us.  You can see that we really need parents for a trip like that!!

       Fire Prevention and Safety Month:

October is Fire Prevention and Safety Month.  We really stress fire safety through many ways at school - we use a lot of cards that show safety lessons and encourage much conversation, we do related projects in “Imagination Stations”, we have posters up in the room, and we will take a walk up to the Ida Fire Station on Thursday, Oct.11th.  You will receive a permission slip for this on Mon., Oct. 1st and it must be returned immediately back to school.  If we do not receive a permission slip from you, your child will not be able to attend the walking field trip.  We appreciate your support.

       Picture Day:

School pictures will be taken on Tues., Oct.2nd.  Information for this has been sent from the office already.  You will send in the money for the packet of pictures that you want to order BEFORE they are taken on the 2nd.  Please let me know if you did not receive the picture flyer.

       Apple Orchard Trip:

We are going to the Erie Apple Orchard on Tuesday, Oct. 9th.  The information will be sent home on Oct. 4th and it must be returned no later than Oct. 8th. For this trip we do not take any parents, but of course I’ll take pictures and have them in a take home folder!

       Harvest Day Party:

On Tuesday, Oct.30th, we will have our Harvest Day Events in our class and outdoors.  The Kindergarten Team will have special stations planned for the children that day.  If you offered to help with this event, you will be contacted.   I will send more information later this month.  The children will not dress in Halloween costumes due to our Harvest Day activities and no school wide parade.

       November Conferences:

I will be sending out conference confirmation dates and times later this month.  If you did not sign up for a day during our parent meeting, please let me know.  I will try to schedule all of you for the day and time that you prefer (times are limited).  The dates and times are Mon., Nov.19th, the morning conferences will be held in the Storage Room located adjacent to the office and evening conferences will be in our classroom.   Tues., Nov. 20th, same as Monday’s schedule. Monday and Tuesday afternoon and evening are the scheduled times for the rest of the elementary building for conferences, so if you have another child in this school you may want to consider this when you schedule a time.

       Homework Sheets:

As we stated with the first of these papers, they will be sent home periodically throughout the year.  These papers reinforce what we are doing at school, or are seasonal or holiday related, some even art or safety lessons, and some just for fun.  Unless stated on the paper they do not have to be returned.   Skill builder sheets do not need to be returned to school, as well.We hope that you find the time spent with your child on these both informative and fun.

       Reading Program:

We are in our third theme and are introducing the letters of the alphabet in order.  We print the capital and the lower case and stress the sound that the letter makes.  We will print the letter on the day it is introduced, turn the paper over, and make pictures of things that begin with that sound.  Watch for these papers, and try to review both the letter name and the sound with your child at home.

       “Imagination Stations”

The children have responded very well to this twice a week program.  The interaction between them and the various skills they are learning have been fun to watch.  I am sure that if you asked them, these are their favorite days!!

     PTA:

The membership drive is going on, and I do encourage you to become a member of our elementary PTA.  This group has the best interest of the children and the staff of this building at heart - they do so much for the entire school.  On  Oct. 9th they are having a meeting at 7:00PM .

       Snacks:

The children especially thank you for the snacks that have come in; they really enjoy a little something towards the end of their day.  If your child’s class is running low in their snack box, I will tell them - so if they tell you that I said they need snacks, they are probably right.  The classes are all set at this time on snacks and drinks.

Thank You!

       Crayons:

Most of the children could use a new box of crayons.  They do take their time and do a better job over all if their crayons are in pretty good shape.  I really do prefer at this time that they only have a box of 8, or no more than 16.  The new twistable crayon work really well too.

Please try to take a few minutes each day to talk to your child about their day at school and to go over any papers that they have brought home.  Comment in a positive way, and encourage them to always take their time and do their best - and then you and all of the family be proud of what they have done.  Again, your interest and continued support are so important for them to get a good start in school.

                               Thanks so much!!
